Before you do anything else, look at your soil like you’re Sherlock Holmes with a trowel. Is it sandy, clay-heavy, or that perfect loamy stuff from a gardening magazine? Healthy soil is the single most important factor for a thriving lawn.
You can buy a simple soil test kit online or at a garden center for under twenty bucks. It tells you the pH level and what nutrients are missing, like a cheat sheet for Mother Nature. A good starting point is to aim for a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0, which is where most grass types feel right at home.
Clear the Stage, Then Rake the Floor
Think of your lawn as a theater production, and the grass seed is the star. You wouldn’t ask a lead actor to perform on a stage cluttered with rocks and old leaves, would you? Remove all debris, including dead grass, small stones, and anything that doesn’t belong.
Once the stage is cleared, give the top two or three inches of soil a good, thorough raking. This loosens the earth so tiny roots can stretch out without hitting a wall. Pro tip: If the soil feels like concrete, wet it lightly a day before to soften it up.
