Look, I know you didn’t wake up today thinking, “Gee, I need to learn about a decommissioned Air Force base in Florida.” But this is the cool part. It’s a secret history hiding in plain sight.
Making history: 50th Red Devils take flight > MacDill Air Force Base
Next time you’re stuck in traffic on the 528 heading to the airport, look out the window. Imagine it’s 1943. You see a line of B-17 bombers warming up. Guys in leather jackets are smoking Lucky Strikes. It’s loud. It smells like fuel.
Now it’s you, an iced latte, and a five-dollar sandwich from the food court. Progress is weird, right?
The Legacy
The base also helped shape modern Orlando. All those military contracts brought money and people to a tiny town. It turned it into the tourist trap we know and love today.
So in a weird way, the Air Force is responsible for Disney World. Not directly, but… kind of. The infrastructure was there. The runways were ready. Without McCoy Air Force Base, your family vacation might have been in, I don’t know, Gainesville.
And nobody wants that. No shade to Gainesville, but it doesn’t have a mouse.
So raise your glass of orange juice (or whatever) to the ghosts of the Orlando Air Force Base. They handled the real heat—combat and training—so we could handle the artificial heat of a theme park sun.
Talk about a glow-up. From bombs to hugs. From radar to roller coasters. Florida, you did good.
