Want to get the most out of your viewing hour? Watch with friends on a video call or in person. The commentary is half the fun. When Katy Perry makes a confusingly poetic critique, you need someone to look at and laugh.
Also, keep your phone handy for social media. The official hashtags and the fan-run accounts often provide better analysis than the show’s own commentary. You’ll find people obsessing over a guitarist’s smile or a contestant’s vocal run that the cameras missed.
Fun fact: Did you know that the show’s iconic theme song, “No Day But Today” from Rent, was originally a protest anthem? Now it is the soundtrack to millions of dreams coming true. That is some serious pop culture irony for your dinner conversation.
