Let’s be honest—do we really want to be elbowing our way through a supermarket on a public holiday? Probably not. Bank Holidays are meant for slowing down. Remember when your gran used to say, “No work today, love”? She was onto something.
Use the time to do nothing spectacular. Have a late breakfast. Read a magazine in the garden. Go for a walk and actually look at the clouds. The shops being closed is a gentle nudge from the universe to stop consuming and start living.

Think of it like a forced digital detox, but for your wallet. You save money, you reduce stress, and you get a proper day off from the “got to buy this” mentality. It’s a win-win.
How to Survive the Great Bank Holiday Shop-Drought
First, check online before you leave the sofa. Most big stores have a holiday hours page. Second, embrace the concept of “larder shopping.” Buy your essentials the day before—milk, bread, and emergency chocolate. Trust me, it feels like adulting done right.
If you must buy something, look for convenience shops in petrol stations or train stations. They’re usually open, but expect to pay a premium. A single banana might cost you the same as a fancy coffee. Still, it’s better than no banana.
And finally, remember the golden rule: the best Bank Holiday is the one where you don’t need a shop at all. You’ve got a home. You’ve got snacks. You’ve got time. Isn’t that enough?
