In many places, Easter Monday is a public holiday—think of it as the universe’s way of saying, “Take a breath.” But not all shops close their doors. In the UK, for example, supermarkers often open with reduced hours, while smaller indie shops might lock up tight. It’s a delightful guessing game—and you’re the star player.
Why does this matter? Because finding an open café on Easter Monday feels like winning a tiny treasure. You walk in, order a hot cross bun latte (yes, that’s a thing), and suddenly you’re part of a secret club of holiday survivors. The thrill is real.
Your Three-Step Survival Guide
First, check online before you leave the house. A quick search like “are shops open Easter Monday [your town]” saves you from a sad car ride. You can even set a reminder—because who wants to be that person peering through locked glass?
Second, know the local rules. In many U.S. states, Easter Monday isn’t a legal holiday, so shops run as usual. But in Australia, it’s a public holiday across the board—grocery stores might be closed, but petrol stations stay open (thank goodness for emergency chocolate). See? Every region has its own little quirk.
Third, embrace the “maybe”. If a shop is closed, that’s your permission slip to do something unexpected. Go for a walk, start a silly movie marathon, or bake your own hot cross buns. Closed doors can lead to open adventures.
