Let’s get practical. What can you pack that won’t get you in trouble or make a mess? Fresh fruit is a superstar: apples, grapes, and bananas travel beautifully. Sandwiches are perfect, just keep them simple (no dripping sauces).
Granola bars, crackers, nuts, and dried fruit are the holy trinity of plane snacking. They are quiet, they are compact, and they won’t go bad if the flight is delayed. I always bring a bag of almond M&Ms—they are my emergency landing gear for bad moods.
For something savory, pre-made wraps (without dressing) or a thermos of solid soup (yes, you can bring soup if it’s frozen solid when you go through security) are game-changers. But remember: frozen is the secret word—if it’s liquid, it gets tossed.
The “Naughty” List (What to Avoid at All Costs)
You can bring almost anything, but certain foods will get you funny looks. Avoid anything with a strong odor. Do you really want to be the person eating a tuna sandwich on a packed flight? That’s how you make enemies.
Also, leave the whole cake at home. I saw a guy try to bring a full homemade pie through security once. The agent confiscated it for a “secondary inspection.” He never got it back. That pie is living its best life in an employee break room somewhere.
And please, for the love of all that is holy, no durian. Just don’t. The smell will clear the cabin faster than a depressurization event.
