The main worry with a boil water advisory is bacteria, viruses, and parasites like giardia. Your dishwasher’s typical hot water cycle might hit around 130–150°F (54–66°C). That’s toasty for a bubble bath, but it’s not hot enough to reliably nuke those waterborne crashers.
To truly sanitize, you need water at a rolling boil—212°F (100°C)—for at least one minute. Your machine can’t do that without help. But! If you have a sanitize cycle on your dishwasher, you’re in luck. Those cycles are designed to get the water even hotter, often past 155°F (68°C), which is game-changing.
Even with a sanitize cycle, check your manual. Some models just add a rinse agent and don’t actually boost the temperature enough to kill all bugs. Read the fine print, you beautiful nerd. Your friends will thank you.
