Sometimes two players hit the quarterback at the exact same time. Statistically, that’s a half-sack for each player. Half the glory, double the high-fives.

And what about when the quarterback runs sideways for ten yards and then gets tackled? That’s not a sack—that’s him playing silly buggers with his own playbook. He’s a runner. No sack for you.

But the best sacks are the “blindside” variety. The quarterback never sees it coming. He’s looking right, and suddenly a linebacker from the left knocks him into next Tuesday.

Sacks in the Modern Game

Today’s quarterbacks are more athletic. They’re like escape artists. They can spin, duck, and even throw the ball away to avoid a sack. Some quarterbacks have been sacked so much they probably have their own orthopedic surgeon on speed dial.

But a great defense will still get their man. They use speed, power, and pure aggression. It’s like a lion hunting a gazelle, except the gazelle wears a helmet and yells “HUT!”

One of the most famous sack artists was Reggie White. He had a move called the “hump move.” It looked illegal. It probably was. But he was so big and strong, referees just shrugged. That’s football, baby.
