It happened in the Season 5 finale, an episode titled “Now or Never.” George wasn’t killed by a disease or a bad surgery. Oh no, that would be too simple for Shonda Rhimes. Instead, George saw a woman about to get hit by a speeding bus. Being 007, he pushed her out of the way.
He got hit instead. Hard. The bus literally ran him over. We didn’t even see his face; we just saw a mangled, unrecognizable body being wheeled into the ER. It was brutal, and we were all left screaming, "Who is that?!"
The "John Doe" Nightmare
So, George arrives in the ER as a complete John Doe. His face is shattered, his body is broken, and no one knows who he is. The irony here is thick enough to cut with a scalpel. The man who spent his entire residency feeling invisible was finally, literally, unidentifiable. All the doctors, his best friends, are working on him, completely oblivious.
Then, the moment of truth arrives. Callie Torres, his ex-wife, is trying to identify the patient. She looks at his hand and sees nothing. She looks at his chest... and then she sees it. A small mark. A freckle. She whispers, “It’s George.” And I swear, my heart stopped.

She screams. Izzie Stevens, who is literally dying of cancer in the next bed, hears the scream. The look on her face? Utter devastation. It was like watching a house of cards collapse in slow motion. That’s how you write a death scene.
The "007" Reveal
You want to talk about cruel genius? Let’s talk about the hand. Callie was tracing his palm, looking for an identifying mark. She couldn’t find one. Then she yelled, “He has a lazy eye!” And as she lifted his eyelid, the music swelled, and we saw his eye.
But wait, there’s more. The episode ended with Izzie, in a dream-like state, walking down a white hallway. And who is standing at the end of that hallway? George, in his Army uniform, looking healthy and happy. He tells her he’s going to the Army. He tells her she has to be brave. And then he gets on an elevator and the doors close. Game over.
