Don’t use toothpaste. I know your grandma wrote about it in a blog in 2006. It’s too abrasive. It will scratch the silver, giving it a dull, sanded look. You’ll cry.
Don’t use bleach. Ever. Bleach will literally eat the silver. It will turn it black instantly, like a magic trick gone horribly wrong.
Don’t put it in the dishwasher. The dishwasher is a cruel, hot, chemical bath of doom for silver. It will survive, barely, but it will look haunted and sad.
The Post-Cleaning Game Plan
So you’ve done the aluminum foil dance. Your fork is shiny. It’s reflecting your face back at you like a tiny mirror. Now what?
Dry it immediately. Every single time. Water is the enemy of a good shine. Wear and tear comes from moisture left to sit.
Store it in a tarnish-proof cloth bag. Or wrap each piece in acid-free tissue paper. If you own a silver chest, use it. That felt lining is not for decoration. It’s a security blanket for your spoons.
Don’t store it with rubber bands. Rubber contains sulfur. Your silver will turn black right where the rubber touches, and it will look like it got a weird tattoo.
