Most people will tell you to take I-75 North toward Ocala, then cut over on Highway 231 near Marianna. That’s the “tried and true” path—straight, boring, but efficient. You’ll pass through towns like Lake City and Panama City proper before hitting the beaches.
But here’s the kicker: Highway 231 is a two-lane road for a while, and if you get stuck behind a tractor or a turtle crossing (yes, it happens), your three-hour drive turns into “why did I agree to this?” Really, I once saw a wild turkey on that road—true story.
Plan B: The “Scenic” Coastal Route
There’s a more beautiful option: take Highway 98 along the Gulf Coast. It adds an extra 30 to 45 minutes—and about a million stoplights—but you get ocean views on one side and tacky beach shops on the other. Honestly, it’s perfect if you’re in a “I’m on vacation, not a mission” mood.
Just be warned: it’s also the favorite road of snowbirds who drive 41 mph in the left lane while trying to find their sunscreen. You’ll curse them, then realize you forgot yours too, and suddenly they’re your spirit animal.
