Look for the Three S’s: Soft spots, Soggy texture, Smell.
If they smell like wine, they’re fermenting. That’s nature’s way of saying “eat me now or toss me.”
If they’re slimy, you’ve lost the battle. Mold doesn’t negotiate. Just throw them out and move on with your life.
Funny enough, a single moldy slice can ruin the whole container. One bad apple? More like one bad berry gang.
Freeze or Feast: The Golden Rule
If you can’t eat them in two days, freeze them immediately. Sliced strawberries freeze beautifully. They become smoothie gold.
Lay them flat on a baking sheet first. Freeze for an hour. Then toss into a bag. This prevents a giant berry ice cube.
Frozen, they last six to nine months. That’s a whole shelf-life universe compared to your fridge’s measly 48 hours.
