Your nose knows. If it smells like sour milk or a damp gym sock, it’s time to say goodbye. Other red flags include a slimy, wet surface, spots of mold (even tiny ones—cutting them off is risky with soft cheese), or a dried-out, cracked texture.
One truly weird symptom: if the cheese develops a pinkish or sticky residue on the outside? That’s a bad bacteria party. Throw it out immediately. No funeral required—just a quick, silent trip to the trash.
The “Sniff Test” vs. The “First Slice” Rule
Always trust your gut. If a slice looks fine but smells a little “off,” don’t risk it for a cheap sandwich. The first slice in a pack will usually go bad fastest because it’s exposed to the most air.
So, eat from the middle of the stack first. The outer slices are like bodyguards—they take the damage so the inner cheese stays perfect. Thank them by eating them first.
