Your biggest culprit is that hot water. Heating up a standard 40-gallon tub from cold to scalding uses about 0.2 kilowatt-hours per gallon. That’s roughly 8 kilowatt-hours for a full bath. In the U.S., the average electricity rate is about 14 cents per kWh, so that’s around $1.12 just for the heat.
But wait—if you have a gas water heater, you’re stealing cheaper energy. Gas is about half the price, so you might drop only 50 to 70 cents per bath. That’s still more than a fancy coffee, but less than a therapy session. Choose wisely, bather.
