Pulp’s heyday was the 1990s. They sold millions of albums, played Glastonbury twice, and headlined arenas. Royalties from those hits are a nice, steady drip. Think of it as a hipster pension fund.
But here’s the skinny: Pulp wasn’t a money machine like U2. They were too weird, too art school. Jarvis famously gave away a lot of his early earnings to the band. He’s not a greedy guy. He’d rather buy a rare book than a yacht.
The Unexpected Side Hustles
Jarvis is a survivor. When Pulp went on hiatus, he didn’t cry into his cornflakes. He reinvented himself as a radio DJ. His show on BBC 6 Music is a cult hit. It pays the bills, and he gets to play obscure French pop songs.
He also writes for magazines. He’s a sharp critic of fashion and music. He’s done voiceover work for documentaries. He even narrated a nature series about caterpillars. True story. That paycheck was probably tiny, but very cozy.
Let’s not forget his solo albums. They sell modestly, but his fans are obsessive. They buy the vinyl, the limited editions, the box sets. Every “Jarvis Cocker” album is a collector’s item waiting to happen.
