Skip the fancy lab coats. All you need is a pack of pH test strips. You can grab them online or at a pharmacy for like ten bucks. They look like little paper sticks, usually come with a color chart, and are comically low-tech. Think of it as a DIY science experiment for your bathroom sink.

Now, there are two main ways to test: saliva or urine. Saliva testing is quick and shows what’s happening with your digestion and enzyme activity. Urine testing gives you a bigger picture of how your body is processing minerals and getting rid of waste. Neither is “better”—just different angles on the same story.

Testing your saliva (the spit check)

Don’t test right after you’ve eaten, brushed your teeth, or chugged water. Wait at least one hour, or better yet, do it first thing in the morning when your mouth is calm. Spit a little bit onto a clean spoon, dip the test strip in for a few seconds, and then… wait. The strip will change color almost instantly.

Compare that color to the chart on the box. A reading between 6.8 and 7.2 is solid—your internal pond is balanced. If it’s below 6.5, think of it as your body whispering, “Hey, maybe ease up on that soda.”

Testing your urine (the mid-stream trick)

This one is even simpler. Pee into a cup (a clean one, you savages) and dip the strip into the stream of urine or into the cup for one second. The best time? Your second pee of the day, not the first. The morning batch is often more concentrated and can be misleading.

Healthy urine pH usually falls between 6.0 and 7.5. If it’s too acidic (below 6.0), you might be eating a lot of meat or stressing hard. If it’s too alkaline (above 8.0), you might be overdoing the green juice or have a hidden imbalance. It’s not a diagnosis—it’s a conversation starter with yourself.
