Now, start at the top of the fence. Use your gloved hands to gently peel the ivy away from the surface. Work from top to bottom so gravity helps you, not the ivy.
If the vines are stubborn, use your putty knife or screwdriver to pry the holdfasts loose. Slide the blade between the vine and the fence, and gently wiggle it free.
Be extra careful with wood fences. You don’t want to gouge the wood and give the ivy new places to burrow into later. Patience is your superpower here.

Ivy vines can be as thick as your thumb. They’re like green cables. And they snap sometimes, whipping you in the face.
