Ratios can look scary, like 12:8. But that’s just a disguise. Ask yourself: what number divides both? Is it 4? Yes, because you’re a genius. Divide 12 by 4 to get 3, and 8 by 4 to get 2. Boom, it’s 3:2. You have just simplified a ratio faster than I can simplify my life choices.

If you can’t find a common factor, you might be staring at a prime number. That’s fine—some ratios are just stubborn. Like that one friend who refuses to split the bill evenly. “I only had one appetizer!” Yeah, sure, Karen.

The “Muffin Emergency” Test

Let’s make this practical. You bake 24 muffins. You want to give them to yourself and one other person. The ratio of your muffins to their muffins should be 23:1, but that’s selfish. Let’s say you want a fair 1:1 ratio. That’s 12 muffins each. But you have eyes, so you bump it to 15:9. See? Ratios are negotiable.

Now, what if you have 4 people and 20 cookies? Five per person is a ratio of 5:1 (cookies to person). But one friend is on a diet, so they get 2, and you get 8. That’s a ratio of 8:2 simplified to 4:1, and you are now the villain of the cookie story. Welcome to ratio ethics.
