First, the bad news: the Woolwich Ferry is old. Like, really old. The boats (the James Newman, the John Burns, and the little spinster, the Bevan) have been around since the 1960s. They’re nostalgic, sure, but also prone to dramatic breakdowns.
When one boat breaks down, chaos ensues. You then have one ferry doing the work of two. That means longer waits, grumpy drivers, and you stuck listening to sea gulls mock you. It’s a spectacle, really.
But here’s the kicker: the ferry’s status is not always posted clearly. Sometimes it’s a tiny text on the official site. Other times, you have to rely on a cryptic tweet from TfL (Transport for London). Who has time for that?
The Great Silent Culprit: The Tide
Ah, the Thames tide. It’s the sneaky villain of this story. Low tide can actually cancel the ferry for hours. The ramps won’t reach, the boats get stuck, and you’re left wondering if you should just swim across.
Honestly, the tide is the ferry’s passive-aggressive sidekick. It doesn’t care about your plans. “Oh, you have a dentist appointment? Sorry, the mud is too thick.” It’s frustrating, but also kind of impressive. Nature 1, Commuters 0.
The Official Sources: A Treasure Hunt
So, how do you find out if it’s running? First, hit TfL’s official website. Look for the Woolwich Ferry page. Not the Tube page, not the bus page—the ferry page. It’s a digital needle in a haystack.

Next, check X (formerly Twitter). Yes, I know, it’s a swamp. But TfL’s account often posts updates there. Search “Woolwich Ferry suspended” and brace yourself for bad news. Or good news! It’s a lottery.
Don’t trust random forums. Someone on Reddit might say it’s running, but they’re probably lying. Or they’re a time traveler from 2018. Stick to official sources, my friend. Your sanity depends on it.
