The Peacocks Centre is Woking’s indoor shopping mall. It’s fine. It’s got a Primark and a suspiciously vacant escalator. On weekends, it fills with families, teenagers doing parkour on benches, and that one guy selling phone cases with a megaphone.
If you want actual culture, skip the mall and head to the Lighthouse. It’s an arts center that hosts everything from comedy nights to poetry slams, and it feels like the town’s cool, slightly younger aunt.
The People: Nice or…?
Woking is a blend of commuters, students, and surprisingly famous people. Paul Weller from The Jam grew up here, and Ed Sheeran allegedly once busked on the high street. The locals are friendly but in a “hi, yes, nice weather, don’t block the bike lane” way.
You’ll find an amazing community at the Saturday market selling artisan cheese and sourdough. Everyone is secretly comparing their figs, but they’ll still give you a taste. It’s polite competition.
