Places like Manchester and Birmingham are creeping up the charts. They used to be the “affordable” alternatives. Ha. That ship has sailed.
Now, you’re paying northern prices with a southern attitude. A flat in Manchester city centre? Prepare to sell a kidney. But at least you can get a decent curry for under a tenner. Small mercies.
Birmingham is trying to be the next big thing. And with big things come big rent cheques. You’ll be paying for the new tram lines whether you use them or not.
So, What’s The Verdict?
Living in any of these cities is a financial workout. Your budget will be doing CrossFit just to survive. But people still flock there. Why?
Because you’re paying for the energy. The buzz. The chance to bump into a celebrity in a Tesco Metro. And the thrill of seeing a room advertised as “cosy” (read: claustrophobic).
If you can afford it? Great! If not, move to a cheaper town, buy a bigger house, and laugh at us from your garden. Seriously, do that. Send photos. We’ll be here, crying into our £6 flat whites.
Now, pass the biscuits. I’ve got rent to worry about.
