Let’s start with the backbone of any emergency: the convenience store. Chains like 7-Eleven, Wawa, and many Kroger-owned convenience stations often operate on a modified schedule. If you live near a major city, you’re almost guaranteed to find a 7-Eleven glowing like a beacon of cheap coffee and tortilla chips.
Don’t sleep on drugstores either. CVS and Walgreens have become the unofficial town square of the holidays. While their pharmacy counters are closed, the front of the store is usually open—stocked with gift cards, chocolates, and surprisingly decent wine.
Hidden Gems: The Gas Station Gourmet
Here’s a fun little fact: Buc-ee’s in Texas is legendary for staying open, offering brisket sandwiches and clean bathrooms on Christmas morning. Even if you’re not in the Lone Star State, many regional gas station chains treat the holiday like a regular shift. Think Sheetz in the mid-Atlantic or QuikTrip in the Midwest.
The secret sauce is simple: these places run on a skeleton crew, often staffed by people who want the holiday pay. Don't be surprised to find a local bodega in New York or a corner store in LA that is mysteriously, wonderfully open. It’s a quiet nod to the human spirit of commerce—and caffeine.
