Let’s start with the true heroes of Bank Holiday Mondays: the corner shop. They are, without fail, always open. It’s as if they have a secret pact with the government to keep the nation’s milk supply flowing. The owner, usually named Raj or Mohammed, will be there, smiling behind the counter as if it’s just a normal Tuesday. Pro tip: They stock everything. A soggy potato, a can of chopped tomatoes from 2019, and a dust-covered bottle of champagne you’ll never buy. It’s like a museum of last-minute desperation.
A surprising fact: many corner shops increase their Bank Holiday footfall by 40%. We are a predictable species. We will queue in a cramped aisle for a pint of milk and a lottery ticket like it’s a Black Friday sale. The real madness? They know you’ll pay £2.50 for a loaf of bread, and you will. You’ll smile and thank them for your survival. It’s either that or a dry bowl of cereal with water. No one wants that misery.
The Big Supermarket Gamble: A Tale of Two Car Parks
Ah, the big chain supermarkets. These are a total gamble. You might drive up to a massive Tesco and find a handwritten sign taped to the door: "CLOSED. Enjoy your day off. We did." It feels personal. You rage against the machine, forgetting that the cashier probably deserves a lie-in. Meanwhile, the Sainsbury’s Local down the road is open, but only until 5pm. Why? Because the universe enjoys your suffering.
🏡 Shop Bank Holiday Opening – Monday 6th May - The Titchmarsh Village
Here’s a funny truth: the smaller the supermarket, the more likely it’s open. A massive 24-hour hypermarket? Locked tighter than a miser’s wallet. A tiny Co-op with one parking space? Open for business, playing gentle music at full volume. You’ll find other desperate souls there, making eye contact with a silent "I see you bought the last baguette." It’s a shared trauma. You’ll never see them again, but you’ll remember their weary look forever.
