The tributes were deafening, obviously. Ed Sheeran cried on stage. Stormzy dedicated songs. His mum, Brenda Edwards—who was a judge on The X Factor—had to bury her son. That’s the real headline. A mother’s heart shattered by a son’s heart failure. The irony is cruel.
So, what do we actually take away from this? Not a lecture. Not a finger-wag. Just a quiet acknowledgment: life is fragile, and partying is a gamble. For most of us, cocaine and a beer is a wild night, maybe a hangover. For a tiny, unlucky percentage, it’s a flatline. Jamal Edwards was in that unlucky percentage. He didn’t die because he was a bad person. He died because his heart—quite literally—had a bad moment.
Is that a comforting answer? Nope. Does it make sense? Not really. Is it true? Unfortunately, yes. Jamal Edwards died because of a catastrophic arrhythmia, contributed to by cocaine and alcohol. And that’s the whole, awful, human truth. Now, go hug your people. And maybe skip that extra line tonight. For Jamal.
