Everyone underestimates the cost. You think, “I’ll just eat cheap!” But then you smell a Cinnabon in the airport, and your wallet cries. Seriously, bring a mix of cash, a debit card that works internationally, and two credit cards for backup. The U.S. runs on plastic, but small diners and the guy selling hot dogs on the corner might only take cash.
I once spent my last $20 on a “gourmet” sandwich in Times Square. It was a sad, dry turkey on a stale roll. The lesson? Carry a little more than your budget says. Tipping is also a thing – a big thing. You tip waiters, bartenders, and even the hotel cleaner. If you don’t, you’ll feel like that person, which is worse than losing a sock in the laundry.

The Luggage Conundrum
Pack light. I know, everyone says it. But you really need half of what you bring. The U.S. is a country where the weather changes its mind like a toddler. You’ll freeze in an air-conditioned Uber, then sweat outside. The real essential is a pair of comfortable walking shoes. You think you’ll drive everywhere? No. You’ll walk from a parking lot so big it has its own zip code.
Oh, and leave the umbrella at home. Americans don’t use umbrellas for rain; they wear hoodies. You’ll look like a tourist, which is fine, but you’ll also poke someone in the eye. Not a great start.
