You’ll usually see this on your GCSE English Language results sheet. Yep, it’s not for all subjects—just the one that’s notoriously obsessed with your speaking skills. The endorsement is specifically for the Spoken Language component. That’s the bit where you had to stand up in front of your class and give a presentation, probably while internally screaming. (Remember that awkward silence when you forgot your cue card? Yeah, that.)
Here’s where it gets a little ironic. The endorsement doesn’t affect your overall grade—it won’t bump you from a 5 to a 6. Instead, your teacher decides if you passed the speaking part with a Pass, Merit, or Distinction. If you didn’t do it (or you literally refused to speak), you get a “Not Classified.” And that little result gets printed right there on your certificate, separate from the main number grade.
But wait—why does it matter?
Honestly? In most cases, it’s a checkbox for universities and employers. They want to make sure you can, you know, string a sentence together in front of other humans. If you get a Pass or above, you’re golden. If you get “Not Classified,” some places might side-eye you—not because you failed, but because you didn’t complete that part of the course. It’s like showing up to a race but not putting on your running shoes.

Here’s the sneaky truth: most people never even notice the endorsement box. (Ironic, right?) You’ll probably spend the next twenty years showing your GCSE certificate for things like a driving license or a job application, and the reader will just glance at the big grade. But if you ever apply for a competitive university course—like medicine or law—they might actually check. So, don’t ignore it, but don’t lose sleep over it either.
