Think of your neighbor who retired early and now spends his days gardening. If he sold his company stock and has a cool $1.2 million in an investment account, he is an HNWI. Even though he still drives a 2008 Honda and complains about the price of avocados. The label has nothing to do with how flashy your life looks; it's purely about the numbers on a statement.
There are even bigger categories, just for fun. An "Ultra-High Net Worth Individual" (UHNWI) has over $30 million. That's the person who buys a yacht and calls it a "dinghy." But for most of us, the HNWI level is the one that feels both distant and strangely achievable—like being able to run a 10k when you can barely walk a mile.
