For centuries, Mexico City was part of the State of Mexico. Imagine it as the loud, charismatic sibling that decided to move out and become its own landlord. That move happened in 1824 when the constitution carved it out as the federal district.
But the city really came into its own in 2016. That’s when it adopted a new constitution and officially became a full-fledged federal entity, similar to a state, but with more autonomy over its local affairs. Think of it as an upgrade from “district” to “powerhouse.”
So, if someone insists Mexico City is in a state, gently correct them with a smile and a sip of your horchata. “Actually,” you’ll say, “it’s its own beautiful bubble.”
