Think of a comedy show like a really good dinner party. The support act is the small talk and the bread basket. You’re polite, you laugh, but your eyes keep darting to the kitchen door. Then, around 8:45 PM, the host finally brings out the roast. That’s Greg. He doesn’t come on at 7:30 because that would be like serving dessert before the salad. It’s a flow, a rhythm.
I once went to a show where the support act was so nervous he kept checking his watch. The entire audience was silently screaming, “Just get off, we want the big man!” It was like watching a waiter refill your water glass for the tenth time when you just want the cheque. Greg, mercifully, exploded onto stage at 8:32 PM, like a calamity in a gigantic trousers.
Why You Can’t Just “Show Up Late”
Now, here’s where everyday life kicks in. You might think, “Oh, I’ll just waltz in at 8:45 PM, skip the support act.” Do not do this. You will walk into a darkened room, fumble past twelve people’s knees, and step on someone’s foot while Greg is mid-rant about his dad’s shed. It’s the social equivalent of showing up to a meeting after the coffee has gone cold.
Pauline Greg Davies
If you rock up at 9:15 PM, you’ve missed the first twenty minutes of Greg telling a long, glorious story about a trip to IKEA that ended with him trapped in a display wardrobe. That’s like reading a book starting on page fifty. You’ll spend the rest of the night thinking, “Wait, why is he crying about a flat-pack shelf?”
Typically, the venue doors open about an hour before the show starts. 7:30 PM doors for an 8:00 PM start is the classic setup. This is your buffer zone. It’s the same buffer you use when you tell your partner “I’ll be ready in five minutes” when you really mean fifteen. Use that time to get a drink, find your seat, and mentally prepare for the tornado of energy that is Greg Davies.
