Why do they always pick 8:08? It’s not 8, not 8:05, but 8:08. It’s like someone at MLB headquarters said, “Let’s make it feel official, but also slightly confusing, like a math problem your uncle tries to solve after three beers.” For the average fan, this means you’re either rushing home from work, ignoring a phone call from your boss, or pretending the laundry can wait another day. Spoiler: it can.
Let’s be real—Game 3 often falls on a Friday night or a weekday evening, which means you’re negotiating with life itself. You might be asking your partner, “Can you pause the baby monitor for three hours?” or telling your dog, “We’ll walk after the seventh-inning stretch.” The 8:08 start time becomes a tiny island of sanity in a sea of adult responsibilities. It’s the moment you allow yourself to stop being a grown-up and become a fan with a foam finger.
A Little Anecdote About My Own Game 3 Disaster
I once missed the first inning of a World Series Game 3 because I thought it started at 7:00. I had the snacks laid out, the cat was fed, and I was ready to yell at the TV. Then I checked the time: 7:05 PM, and the game wasn’t on. I scrolled through 47 channels, panicking, until I realized it’s always 8:08. I felt like a kid who showed up to school on Saturday—dressed and ready, but completely out of sync with the universe. Now, I set three alarms: one for 7:30 (snack prep), one for 8:00 (pre-game show), and one for 8:08 (actual baseball). It’s ridiculous, but it works.
Another time, a buddy told me, “Dude, Game 3 starts at 8:08, but it’s really just a suggestion.” And he was right. There’s always a rain delay, a singer who holds the national anthem for way too long, or a ceremonial first pitch that goes viral. You sit there, nachos getting cold, thinking, “I have to work tomorrow, Felix,” but you stay. Because this is the World Series, baby, and time becomes a loose suggestion.
