Let’s do some quick, dirty math. I’ll list a sensible, safe load for a 6500-watt generator. Remember: running watts, not start-up madness.
What you can probably run at once:
- Fridge: 700 watts (running)
- Chest freezer: 500 watts (running)
- Window AC (10,000 BTU): 1200 watts
- LED lights (whole house): 200 watts
- TV + modem + soundbar: 250 watts
- A few phone chargers: 30 watts
- Microwave (small one, 700 watts cooking power, actually pulls 1100): But only for a few minutes.

Add that up: 700 + 500 + 1200 + 200 + 250 + 30 = 2880 running watts. You’ve got loads of room for a sump pump surge or to start the microwave. You could even add a box fan or a small space heater (carefully!).
Can You Run a Well Pump?
Maybe. A 1/2 horsepower well pump can use 1000-1500 watts running, but start-up can hit 3000 to 4000 watts. That’s a big ask. If your well pump is small and you have nothing else running, it might work. If it’s a big pump? You’re going to be taking bucket baths. Sorry. Check the tag on your pump. It might ruin your day.
