Let’s be honest: watching Scotland play is like watching your mate Dave try to assemble flat-pack furniture. It’s chaotic, it’s emotional, and there’s a 50% chance you’ll end up laughing or crying—sometimes both. But that’s exactly why we love it. The first game against Peru is a chance to set the tone for the whole tournament, and if Scotland can grab a win, you’ll hear the roar from Perth to Paisley.
Picture this: you’re at home, or maybe at your local pub with a pint, and the ball hits the net. Your neighbour, who you’ve never spoken to, will suddenly become your best friend, hugging you like you’ve known each other for years. That’s what the World Cup does—it turns strangers into a wee family, united by tartan and hope.
How to get ready for the big day
First, mark your calendar right now. Use a big red pen, a digital reminder, or even write it on your hand if you have to. I’m talking about June 14, 2026, at 8 PM local time in the US (which means it’ll be early morning in Scotland, so set your alarms). If you’re in Scotland, you’ll probably be watching at 1 AM, which is perfect for a midnight feast of Irn-Bru and shortbread.

Second, sort out your viewing party. You don’t need fancy decorations—just a TV, some snacks, and maybe a lucky scarf. My gran swears by wearing her old woolly hat from 1990, and she hasn’t missed a goal yet. If you don’t have a lucky item, borrow one. The power of superstition is real, people.
And third, practice your “Alba gu bràth!” chant in front of the mirror. It means “Scotland forever,” and it’s the kind of phrase that makes you feel ten feet tall, even if you’re just sitting on your sofa in fluffy slippers. You’ll need it ready for when the national anthem plays—which, by the way, gives me goosebumps every single time.
