Now, here’s where things get weird. Not all dolphins live in the ocean. Wait, what? Yes, you read that right. There are actual dolphins that live in freshwater rivers.
Bottlenose Dolphin Diagram
The Amazon river dolphin, also called the boto, is a pale pink creature that swims through flooded forests in Brazil and Peru. It’s not a whale stuck in a river—it’s a true freshwater specialist, with flexible necks and big brains to navigate murky waters.
And then there’s the Indus and Ganges river dolphins in South Asia. These guys are almost blind (seriously, their eyes are tiny) because they live in muddy rivers where vision is pointless. They use echolocation to “see” their world. (Imagine having to yell at your dinner to find it.)
Unfortunately, river dolphin habitats are shrinking fast due to dams and pollution. So if you ever meet one, give it some respect—and maybe a clean water petition.
