For most of its 410 miles, the A1 is a bipolar road. One minute you’re flying along the A1(M) motorway, feeling like a race car driver. The next minute you’re dumped onto a single-carriageway road, stuck behind a tractor carrying hay. It’s the Jekyll and Hyde of tarmac. And don’t get me started on the Alconbury interchange—that thing looks like a plate of spaghetti thrown at a map.

The Wetherby Whinge
You will pass through Wetherby in Yorkshire. You will ask yourself, “Is this the end?” No. It’s a cruel joke. The A1 turns into a dual carriageway again, only to hit a roundabout named Bramham. It’s the road’s way of saying, “You thought you were done? Sit down, pal.” The locals call it the “Bramham Bounce” because your car will literally bounce over the frost heaves.
