Now, meet the president everyone remembers: Lyndon B. Johnson. LBJ had a disastrous hand dealt to him in 1964. After a confusing incident in the Gulf of Tonkin, he ordered massive bombing campaigns and sent hundreds of thousands of US combat troops. He escalated the war to its peak, with over 500,000 soldiers in country by 1968.
10 Presidents Who Changed the US
LBJ’s heart was in his “Great Society” programs at home, but Vietnam consumed him. You can see the toll it took. He ultimately decided not to run for re-election in 1968. Sometimes the biggest decision a leader makes is to step away.
And finally, Richard Nixon. Trick question: he was elected in 1968 on a promise to end the war! And he did... sort of. He pursued a policy called “Vietnamization”—handing the fighting back to the South Vietnamese army while secretly bombing neighboring Cambodia. It took four more agonizing years, but by 1973, all US combat troops were gone. Nixon didn’t start the war, but he got the messy job of ending it.

It’s a messy, human struggle of good intentions, fear, and bad timing. When you know this, you can actually understand modern political debates.
