Here’s the juicy bit—the reason it feels like a plague of tape has descended upon the nation. A few years ago, Royal Mail upgraded their boxes with a new, more secure locking mechanism. The idea was great: prevent thieves from fishing your mail out (yes, that’s a real crime called “fishing”). But the new locks are notoriously sensitive.
They pop open at the drop of a hat—or a snowflake, a pigeon landing on them, or even a change in temperature. So, the tape is actually a badge of honor for the new, super-secure, slightly-temperamental locking system. It’s like having a smart lock on your front door that beeps loudly every time a butterfly farts nearby. Smart? Yes. Annoying? Absolutely.
So, next time you see a taped-up post box, don’t groan. Give it a little nod of respect. It’s not broken; it’s just being safeguarded until its proper appointment with the post box doctor. It’s a tiny, red warrior, wrapped in a temporary bandage, still doing its duty.
But Is It Safe to Use It?
Short answer: Yes! If the slot is open, the mail is being collected. The tape is only on the collection door (the big one the postman opens). Your job is to push your envelope through the smaller slot. That slot is usually untouched. So keep mailing! Don’t let the tape scare you off.

And if you see one that’s completely covered in tape—like a mummy—then it’s probably taken out of service temporarily. But don’t panic. There’s always another box a block away. It’s not the end of the postal world; it’s just a little post box nap.
In the grand scheme of things, a bit of tape is a very positive sign. It means someone is paying attention. It means the system is working, even if it’s working in a slightly scruffy, human, “let’s just tape it for now” kind of way. It’s charming, really.
